Remembering Ralston
John Ralston was a legendary Stanford football coach, mentor, teacher, and leader whose impact extended far beyond the field. As Stanford’s head football coach from 1963 to 1971, Ralston revitalized the program, led Stanford to consecutive Rose Bowl victories in 1971 and 1972, and helped shape one of the most respected coaching legacies in college football.
More About John Ralston
Yet Ralston is remembered not only for what his teams achieved, but for how he led. He was known for his outgoing personality, relentless work ethic, innovative thinking, organization, and positive attitude. Former Stanford head coach David Shaw described Ralston’s name as synonymous with “teaching, positive energy and class.”
Ralston approached coaching as a form of teaching and mentorship. He believed deeply in developing the people around him and creating conditions in which others could grow into leaders themselves. The John Ralston Stanford Leadership Fellowship honors this legacy by focusing on purposeful leaders who lead with confidence, humility, self-discipline, and an ability to mentor others, build resilient relationships, and inspire teams toward collective goals.
Ralston’s Legacy at Stanford
During his nine years at Stanford, Ralston compiled a 55–36–3 record, won consecutive Pac-8 titles in 1970 and 1971, and coached Stanford through two historic Rose Bowl victories. Under his leadership, Jim Plunkett became Stanford’s first and only Heisman Trophy winner, and many members of Ralston’s coaching staff went on to become influential leaders in professional and collegiate football.
Ralston’s accomplishments include induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, and the athletics halls of fame at Stanford, San Jose State, and Utah State. He was also selected as Stanford’s “Coach of the Century” during the university’s centennial celebration.
